It is with great sadness that WBA announces the passing of Shirlee Whitcomb, a founder of this organization and serving as judge coordinator since its creation. A lifetime resident of Walnut Creek, California, she passed away on January 4, 2017, at the age of 83.
Shirlee graduated from University of California Berkeley majoring in English, she is credited with creating the scoring system for WBA and mentoring a generation of instructors, directors, and judges. She was a friend to all and her joy in watching the bands of WBA was evident to all who knew her.
Shirlee also was a founder of Winter Guard International and was inducted into the WGI Hall of Fame in 1992. She was the Director of Color Guard Development focusing her efforts on smaller, less experienced color guards. She also broke barriers as one of the first female judges for Drum Corps International.
We are forever indebted to Shirlee Whitcomb and grateful for all she shared with the bands of WBA. She will remain etched in our hearts forever.
