
Director of bands at Air Academy High School from 2003 - 2018. During that time the Air Academy Marching Band was named as grand champion at over 20 band festivals, earned nine Colorado State Championships, four BOA (Bands of America) Regional Class Championships, and performed in the Rose Parade in 2018. In addition, the wind ensemble and advanced jazz band have been recognized for their performances throughout his tenure at Air Academy High School. They have received five invitations to perform at the Colorado Music Educators Conference, The North Texas Jazz Festival, The JENerations Jazz Festival in New Orleans, and the Colorado State Concert Band Festival where they regularly received a rating of “Superior with Distinction”.
Stoney Black received a Bachelor of Arts in Percussion Performance from Adams State College in 1994 and continued his study of percussion at the University of Northern Colorado. In 1998, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Metropolitan State College in Denver, and he completed his Master of Arts in conducting from the American Band College at Southern Oregon University in 2007.
Mr. Black has served on the CBA Marching Band Committee for over 10 years; he served on the CBA executive board as vice president from 2005 – 2009; and served on the Bands of America Marching Band Advisory Board from 2015 - 2018.
